The most important sectors of Poland’s economy in 2021 were wholesale and retail trade, transport, accommodation and food services (24.9%), Industry (24.2%) and public administration, defence, education, human health and social work activities (15.3%).

Intra-EU trade accounts for 74% of Poland’s exports (Germany 29%, Czechia 6% and France 5%), while outside the EU 6% go to the United Kingdom and 3% from both Russia and the United States.

In terms of imports, 67% come from EU Member States (Germany 27%, the Netherlands 6% and Italy 5%), while outside the EU 10% come from China and 4% from Russia.


Poland has a rapidly developing manufacturing power as the fastest growing economy in Europe. Accordingly, the demand for innovative production technologies is also increasing. The Polish Government promotes investments in value-added manufacturing that will boost the Polish economy and provides grants and comprehensive support instruments to support innovative R&D efforts. Poland is the sixth largest manufacturing country in the EU, with manufacturing industry accounting for 22.4% of the country's GDP. The leading manufacturing sectors are: Food and beverage; automotive, metal products; coking coal and refined petroleum products, rubber and plastic; chemicals and chemical products, non-metallic mineral products; basic metal products, various machinery and equipment, furniture and electrical equipment. Poland is a center of attraction in the region for investments in industrial automation and production technology.


Automotive industry ranks second following food and beverage in total production in the manufacturing industry in Poland. The sector also has an important place in the socio-economic structure, providing employment to approximately 225 thousand people. The sector is the driving force of growth, with a share of 37% in total exports and 15% of GDP, with 10 production facilities across Poland. In vehicle production in Poland, Volkswagen, FCA Group Opel; Many companies, especially Solaris, Man, Scania, Volvo, have investments in bus production. Volkswagen Poznan is the largest vehicle manufacturer in the country, approximately 50% of the total production is carried out by Volkswagen. Having an important position in the market in the production and export of automotive spare parts, Poland ranks 12th in the world in the export of automotive parts. The sector has a fragmented structure and there are 100 domestic and foreign companies operating in it.


The construction sector has significant potential throughout Poland with the significant growth in recent years. The said growth in the sector stems from infrastructure investments, especially road and railway projects realized in cooperation with EU funds and public-private sector. There is a high demand for large estates and smart building projects in different segments such as individual, family and home-office. In addition, the non-residential construction sector, such as hotels, retail, service and office construction, grew by approximately 20% in 2021. Aside from residential and non-residential construction, the construction sector in Poland has concentrated on infrastructure projects, especially for highways and railways, and infrastructure development works have a 30% share in the construction sector.


Poland is the largest producer of joinery in the European Union, it accounts for 21% of all EU exports which in 2021 amounted to USD 2.9 billion. There are 10 thousand fitting companies, 2.5 thousand window producers, about 1 thousand door manufacturers, over 100 gate manufacturers – most of them are located in the south of Poland, within 200 km from Krakow.
