First growth in production and exports in seven months
In the first month of the year, 184,100 passenger cars were newly registered in Germany, a total of 8% more than in the same month last year. This is the first market increase since June last year.
In January, new electric vehicle registrations rose by 8% to 39,810 units. Of all new registrations, E-cars accounted for 21.6%. New registrations of purely battery-electric passenger cars (BEV) increased by 28%, while those of plug-in hybrids (PHEV) fell by 8%.
New domestic orders rose sharply in January, up 53% year-on-year. In 2021, the increase in VAT to the original level led to a low level of incoming orders. Foreign business fell in January: German manufacturers recorded a 6% drop in orders.
After seven double-digit declines in a row, passenger car production in Germany was up again last month. At the start of the year, German manufacturers produced 256,300 cars (+8%). Of these, 189,100 brand-new cars were delivered to customers abroad (+6%). At the same time, the production level was still more than 20% below figures of January 2020.
