Carlo Salvi accelerates digitalization and R&D

The Italian specialist for high-tech header machines got through the pandemic well – and is setting ambitious goals for the future.

What began with the company foundation in Milan in 1939 has developed over the decades into a leading global technology company based in Garlate, specializing in the manufacture of innovative header machines for cold and hot wire forming. Today, the largest producers of fasteners, for example in the automotive and aerospace industries, rely on Carlo Salvi machines to increase their productivity. Carlo Salvi, a member of the Swiss Hatebur Group, stands for precision, productivity, and maximum efficiency.

In order to expand this status of technology leader in the wire forming industry in the coming decades, Carlo Salvi is pushing digitalization, research and development. Marco Pizzi, Chief Commercial Officer at Carlo Salvi: “Industry 4.0 and digitalization are not just buzzwords for us. The integration of software solutions and the development of versatile headers make our customers more productive and economical."

The company got through the Covid pandemic well: “90 percent of our sales are generated in exports. Thanks to good results in international markets and our strengths in digitalization, we had a good year,” reports Mr. Pizzi. By investing in digitalization, Carlo Salvi was able to put every delivered forming machine through its paces using remote access and thus offer customers uncomplicated and quick service even in the midst of a lockdown.

Turnkey solutions
Carlo Salvi offers turnkey solutions from a single source. The entire production process can be tailored, managed, and coordinated for the customer, from initial consultations through development and manufacture to customer service. The Carlo Salvi forming machines offer enormous possibilities: thread rolling, drilling, and tapping are just a few of the many applications. The forming machines are specifically developed to meet customer requirements and to master complex shapes without any problems. All Carlo Salvi headers are equipped with a management system that enables the processes to be monitored and controlled at any time via remote access.

Marco Pizzi: “We offer an extensive Industry 4.0 service package for maintenance and operation. For us, the interconnectedness also is an opportunity to continue to deepen our expertise and drive market expansion. Looking to the future, we will continue to increase investments in research and development.” Carlo Salvi engineers are currently working on the first machine that combines high-performance heading with a thread rolling unit. “This project is central because it creates a new product line and enables expansion into new industries,” emphasizes Mr. Pizzi.

The employees are the backbone
The company is aware of the crucial role that in-house know-how plays. “The employees are the backbone of Carlo Salvi. We are striving to expand our team and to be able to welcome more highly specialized experts,” says Marco Pizzi. The planned recruitment of skilled workers affects various areas of the company, in organization, management and development. “As a leading company that is active in a niche, we always have to be prepared for new trends and market requirements. We want to have the answers before the questions are even asked. This requires an international team of experts, and we believe that additional specialist staff and investments in research and development can give our company a further boost. "

Carlo Salvi has been shaping industry in the province of Lecco in northern Italy for more than 80 years. With around 100 employees, Carlo Salvi produces the innovative headers at the headquarters in Garlate. In the pandemic year 2020, Carlo Salvi emphasized the ties to the region and the importance of employees for the company's success. Marco Pizzi: "This employee-oriented philosophy makes a major contribution to our success."

“Carlo Salvi Stories”
To underline the importance of team spirit and solidarity, especially in times of a pandemic, Carlo Salvi recently launched the digital project “Carlo Salvi Stories”. On the web portal www.carlosalvistories.com the numerous collaborations of the company, the successes in Italy and around the world, as well as the interpersonal collaboration are in the spotlight. The value of human cooperation and the entrepreneurial spirit are two factors that are examined. The digital project, which is divided into different chapters, is based on the experiences of a storyteller - be it a customer, partner, or employee of Carlo Salvi.

Marco Pizzi: “The pandemic withheld a lot from us. The meetings in person, the handshakes, and the joint toasting of new contracts and collaborations. For this reason, we started Carlo Salvi Stories – to celebrate the people we work with. It is essential to highlight these relationships and collaborations and to demonstrate authenticity and entrepreneurship."
